Thesis Abstract
In response to the persistent challenges faced by rural agricultural communities—including limited access to markets, inadequate financing, and insufficient organizational capacity—this study seeks to design, implement, and evaluate a sustainable cooperative business model tailored specifically to enhance livelihoods and economic resilience within these communities. The overarching aim is to develop a replicable framework that improves collective bargaining power, resource sharing, and access to services for smallholder farmers. To achieve this, the study sets out to (1) analyze existing cooperative structures and identify operational strengths and weaknesses, (2) design an innovative cooperative business model informed by relevant theoretical frameworks, and (3) empirically evaluate the model’s impact on community economic activities and member welfare. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches to generate a comprehensive understanding of the cooperative dynamics. The qualitative component involves thematic analysis of data collected through focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and participatory observation involving a purposive sample of 40 key stakeholders—including community leaders, cooperative members, and local government officials from three rural villages. Complementing this, the quantitative survey employs a structured questionnaire administered to 300 smallholder farmers selected via stratified random sampling, ensuring proportional representation across the target communities. Data collection instruments are validated through expert review and pilot testing, achieving reliability coefficients above 0.8. For data analysis, thematic analysis will be used to interpret qualitative data, while quantitative data will be examined through descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis to assess the relationships between cooperative participation and socio-economic outcomes. Thesis Overview
This research focuses on creating and testing a cooperative business model specifically designed for rural agricultural communities. These communities often face economic challenges such as limited access to markets, lack of capital, and inadequate resources for production. Cooperatives, which are groups of farmers or rural entrepreneurs working together to share resources, improve bargaining power, and access markets more effectively, offer a potential solution. However, many existing cooperative models may not fully address the unique needs and constraints of rural farmers, so there is a need to design a model that fits their specific context and then evaluate its effectiveness.
The study aims to develop a cooperative business model tailored for rural agricultural communities and assess its impact on members’ income, productivity, and overall sustainability. To do this, the researcher will first review existing cooperative models and relevant theories, such as resource dependence theory and social capital theory. The researcher will then design a new model based on the needs identified through interviews and surveys with local farmers and Cooperative leaders.
Data will be collected using mixed methods, including quantitative surveys among 150 farmers and qualitative interviews with 20 cooperative members and stakeholders. The surveys will measure changes in income, production levels, and access to resources before and after implementing the model. Data analysis will involve statistical techniques like regression analysis and paired t-tests to evaluate the model’s impact, combined with thematic analysis of interview data to understand members' experiences and perceptions.
The expected contribution of this study is a practical cooperative business model that can be adopted by similar rural communities and a deeper understanding of how tailored cooperative initiatives can improve rural livelihoods. The main outcome will be a set of recommendations for policymakers and community leaders on how to successfully implement and sustain cooperative business models in rural agriculture, ultimately enhancing economic resilience in these areas.
