Thesis Abstract

The study addresses the persistent inefficiencies in cooperative value chains, where misalignment among producer-members, intermediaries, and consumer groups undermines collective action and erodes overall governance effectiveness within cooperative networks. The aim is to develop a Governance Framework for Cooperative Value Chains (GFCVC) that enhances collective action efficiency by integrating governance principles, participatory decision-making, and performance-based coordination mechanisms. Specific objectives are (1) to map current governance structures and information flows across representative agricultural and artisanal cooperatives; (2) to identify determinants of coordination costs and benefits affecting collective action; (3) to formulate a theory-driven framework linking governance mechanisms to value-chain performance; (4) to validate the framework through empirical testing across multiple cooperatives; and (5) to derive actionable guidance for policy and practice. The study adopts a mixed-methods design anchored in a case-comparative approach, drawing on theories of social capital, principal–agent, and cooperative governance to guide model development. The population comprises twenty-five member-dominated cooperatives across three sectors (agribusiness, agro-processing, and handicrafts) within a defined regional economy. A purposive sample of five to seven representative cooperatives will be selected to ensure variation in size, market orientation, and governance maturity; within each case, 200–250 respondent members, including board directors, managers, and active workers, will be surveyed, complemented by 40 in-depth interviews with key informants and 15 focus groups with producer-member clusters. Data collection instruments include a structured survey capturing governance practices, information transparency, participation, trust, and perceived value-chain performance, semi-structured interview guides informed by the theoretical framework, and documentary evidence from cooperative bylaws and performance reports. Validity and reliability will be ensured through instrument triangulation, pilot testing with 30 respondents, back-checking, and Cronbach’s alpha targets above 0.70 for multi-item scales. Quantitative data will be analyzed using structural equation modeling to test the hypothesized relationships among governance mechanisms, collective action efficiency, and value-chain performance, and hierarchical linear modeling to account for nested data across cooperatives. Qualitative data will be subjected to thematic analysis, guided by pre-identified codes derived from the GFCVC framework and inductive coding for emergent themes, with triangulation against survey results. The model specification includes endogenous constructs for coordination efficiency, information symmetry, trust, and member participation, and exogenous constructs for governance rules, incentive alignment, and external market pressures. Expected findings indicate that governance mechanisms promoting participatory budgeting, transparent information sharing, and incentive-compatible contracts significantly enhance collective action efficiency, reduce coordination costs, and improve product quality, delivery reliability, and market access. The framework is anticipated to reveal interaction effects whereby social capital and formal governance structures jointly influence performance, moderated by sectoral characteristics and market volatility. The study contributes to knowledge by providing a theory-grounded, empirically validated framework for governing value chains in cooperative settings, bridging cooperative governance literature with value-chain management, and offering a parsimonious model transferrable to other membership-based organizations. Policy relevance is demonstrated through scalable guidelines for governance reforms, member engagement practices, and performance-monitoring dashboards that align incentives with cooperative objectives. The main conclusion posits that an integrative governance framework that combines participatory decision processes, transparent information flows, and carefully designed incentive mechanisms can substantially improve collective action efficiency and value-chain outcomes in producer cooperatives. Recommendations include (i) adopting standardized governance disclosures and member training on participatory decision-making; (ii) implementing digital information platforms to enhance traceability and trust; (iii) designing incentive-compatible contracts that align producer and consumer interests; and (iv) conducting longitudinal implementation studies to assess framework durability and adaptability across sectors and regions.

Synthesize findings to refine the framework, identify best practices, and propose an actionable governance blueprint for practitioners.
