Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The study aimed to assess the nutritional status, dietary patterns, and prevalence of chronic diseases among adults in Bida Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study design was employed, and a total of 500 adults aged 18 years and above were selected using a multistage sampling technique. Anthropometric measurements, dietary assessments, and medical history interviews were conducted to collect data. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of adults in Bida Local Government Area had poor nutritional status, with a high prevalence of underweight and overweight/obesity. The dietary patterns observed were characterized by low consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and high intake of processed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages. These dietary habits were associated with the high prevalence of chronic diseases such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes among the study participants. The study highlighted the need for targeted nutrition interventions to improve the dietary habits and nutritional status of adults in Bida Local Government Area. Public health programs focusing on promoting the consumption of a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while limiting the intake of processed foods and sugary drinks, are warranted. Additionally, efforts to increase awareness about the risks of chronic diseases associated with poor dietary patterns should be intensified through community-based health education campaigns. Overall, the findings of this study provide valuable insights into the nutritional status, dietary patterns, and prevalence of chronic diseases among adults in Bida Local Government Area, Niger State, Nigeria. The results underscore the importance of addressing the factors contributing to poor nutrition and chronic disease burden in this population. By implementing targeted interventions and promoting healthy eating habits, public health authorities can work towards reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases and improving the overall health and well-being of adults in the study area.
