Thesis Abstract

Access to affordable and timely financing remains a significant challenge for small businesses, particularly in developing economies where traditional lending processes are often characterized by lengthy procedures, excessive paperwork, and limited transparency. In response to these challenges, this study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a digital loan application system tailored specifically for small businesses, with the goal of enhancing access to credit, reducing processing time, and improving application success rates. The specific objectives are to identify the critical features of a user-friendly digital loan platform, develop a prototype based on best practices and stakeholder input, and assess its efficiency, usability, and impact through empirical evaluation. A mixed-method research design comprising both qualitative and quantitative approaches was adopted. The study population included small business owners, loan officers, and financial service providers within the metropolitan region, totaling approximately 500 stakeholders. A stratified random sampling technique selected a sample of 150 small business owners and 30 loan officers for quantitative surveys, while purposive sampling was employed to select 20 small business owners and 10 financial experts for in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. Data collection instruments comprised structured questionnaires, interview guides, and usability testing sessions. The questionnaires measured variables such as perceived ease of use, satisfaction, and perceived efficiency, while interview protocols sought to garner insights into user experience and system requirements. The system prototype was developed using an iterative agile methodology, leveraging user-centered design principles and incorporating features such as online application submission, document upload, real-time status tracking, and automated decision-making support. Quantitative data collected from surveys were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine relationships between system usability and user satisfaction. Qualitative data from interviews and focus groups were analyzed thematically to identify common themes, user needs, and system improvement opportunities. The effectiveness of the prototype was evaluated through usability testing employing the System Usability Scale (SUS) and task completion time metrics. Expected findings indicate that the digital loan application system significantly reduces application processing time by approximately 40%, improves transparency and user satisfaction, and enhances the accuracy of credit risk assessments. The regression analysis is anticipated to reveal a strong positive correlation (r > 0.6) between system usability scores and perceived credit accessibility among small business users. The thematic analysis is expected to uncover key user requirements such as mobile compatibility, simplified interfaces, and integrated document verification features, which are critical for system adoption and effectiveness. This research will contribute to existing knowledge by providing an empirically validated model for digital loan application systems tailored to small business contexts, grounded in user-centered design and technological integration frameworks. It bridges the gap between theoretical propositions of financial technology adoption, such as the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), and practical implementation within small business finance ecosystems. The developed prototype and evaluation framework serve as a blueprint for financial institutions aiming to digitize their lending processes for small enterprises. The study concludes that the adoption of a well-designed digital loan application platform can significantly improve access to finance for small businesses, foster financial inclusion, and streamline credit assessment procedures. Recommendations include promoting capacity building among users, integrating the system with existing financial infrastructure, and ensuring data security and privacy. Future research is suggested to explore longitudinal impacts, scalability in different regions, and integration with broader financial technology ecosystems. Overall, this thesis demonstrates that strategic design and rigorous evaluation of digital lending solutions have the potential to transform small business financing landscapes, especially in resource-constrained settings.
