Thesis Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital banking services has transformed financial inclusion in many developing and developed economies; however, disparities in adoption rates between urban and rural areas remain significant, posing challenges to equitable financial access. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of digital banking adoption in urban and rural settings, with specific objectives to identify key determinants influencing adoption, assess the level of digital literacy, and evaluate the impact of infrastructural and socio-economic factors across these regions. The research addresses the critical gap in understanding how demographic, technological, and behavioral variables differentially affect digital banking engagement in diverse geographic contexts, thereby informing strategies to promote inclusive financial services. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative survey data with qualitative insights to provide an in-depth understanding of adoption patterns. The quantitative component targets a sample of 1,200 banking customers—600 from urban areas and 600 from rural areas—selected through stratified random sampling from five commercial banks operating in a mid-sized country in Africa. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires measuring variables such as perceived ease of use, security concerns, digital literacy levels, and socio-economic status, validated through content and construct validity procedures. Additionally, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews serve as qualitative sources to explore contextual factors influencing adoption behaviors. Data analysis involves the application of descriptive statistics to summarize respondent characteristics, while inferential analyses employ multiple regression models to identify significant predictors of digital banking adoption within each region. The study also utilizes Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to compare mean differences in adoption levels and digital literacy scores between urban and rural respondents. The theoretical framework draws on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to interpret behavioral intentions and Diffusion of Innovations theory to understand adoption dynamics across different communities. Thematic analysis is applied to qualitative data to extract nuanced insights into perceived barriers and facilitators. Expected findings suggest that digital literacy, infrastructural access, and perceived security significantly influence adoption rates, with urban residents exhibiting higher levels of digital engagement due to better network connectivity and financial literacy. Conversely, rural residents face unique barriers such as limited internet access, lower digital skills, and trust issues, which collectively hinder adoption. The study anticipates demonstrating statistically significant differences in adoption levels and determinant factors between the two groups, corroborating the relevance of contextual interventions. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on regional disparities in digital banking uptake, emphasizing the need for tailored financial inclusion policies. It underscores the importance of infrastructure development, targeted consumer education, and trust-building measures to foster inclusive digital financial services in underserved areas. The study also enhances theoretical understandings by testing adapted models in a real-world context, demonstrating how socio-economic and technological factors interact differently across regions. In conclusion, this study recommends strategic interventions such as improved fintech infrastructure in rural areas, awareness campaigns focused on digital security, and financial literacy programs customized to regional needs. It also advocates for collaborative efforts between financial institutions, government agencies, and community organizations to address regional disparities and promote sustainable financial inclusion. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts of digital literacy initiatives and technological advancements on adoption trends, extending the scope to include emerging digital financial products beyond traditional banking services.

The researcher might also use thematic analysis if qualitative responses are incorporated. The expected outcome is identifying specific factors that influence digital banking use differently in urban versus rural areas, revealing barriers and motivators unique to each setting. By contributing new insights into the digital divide in financial services, this study will help financial institutions develop more inclusive strategies. Its findings can inform policies aimed at increasing digital financial literacy, improving infrastructure, and ensuring equitable access to banking technology across diverse communities.
