Abstract
The banking habits in rural communities have been a subject of growing interest due to the significant impact they have on the financial inclusion and economic development of these areas. This research project aimed to investigate the banking habits of rural communities, with a focus on understanding the factors that influence their choice of banking services and the challenges they face in accessing and utilizing these services. Through a comprehensive literature review, it was found that rural communities often have limited access to traditional banking services, leading to a higher reliance on informal and alternative financial mechanisms. Factors such as limited physical bank branches, inadequate financial literacy, and lack of documentation hinder the adoption of formal banking services in rural areas. In conducting the research, a mixed-methods approach was employed, combining surveys and interviews with residents of rural communities to gather data on their banking habits. The results revealed that while there is a growing awareness of the importance of formal banking services, many rural residents still prefer informal methods such as savings groups and rotating savings and credit associations (ROSCAs) due to convenience and trust issues. Furthermore, the study identified several challenges faced by rural communities in accessing formal banking services, including long distances to the nearest bank branches, high transaction costs, and limited digital literacy. These challenges not only impede financial inclusion but also restrict the ability of rural residents to save, invest, and access credit, thereby limiting their economic opportunities. To address these challenges, the research suggests the need for tailored financial education programs targeted at rural communities to enhance their understanding of formal banking services and improve their financial literacy. Additionally, efforts should be made to expand the reach of banking services in rural areas through mobile banking solutions, agent banking, and community-based banking initiatives. Overall, this research sheds light on the banking habits of rural communities and emphasizes the importance of addressing the barriers that hinder their access to formal financial services. By understanding the factors influencing their banking choices and working towards enhancing financial inclusion, policymakers and financial institutions can help empower rural communities and drive sustainable economic development in these areas.
