Thesis Abstract
Public art that actively engages communities through interactive features has gained prominence as a means to foster social cohesion, civic identity, and participatory culture. Despite the increasing adoption of interactive public artworks, there remains a significant gap in understanding how design elements influence community engagement and the extent to which such artworks generate meaningful social interactions. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate an interactive public art installation to assess its effectiveness in promoting community participation and social cohesion within urban environments. The specific objectives are to identify key design features that enhance user engagement, develop an interactive public art prototype grounded in participatory design principles, and evaluate the social and psychological impacts of the intervention on diverse community groups. The research adopts a mixed-methods sequential exploratory design comprising qualitative and quantitative phases. The qualitative phase involves in-depth interviews and participatory workshops with community members, urban planners, and art practitioners to gather insights into community needs, preferences, and perceived barriers to engagement. Thematic analysis is employed to synthesize these data, informing the design of a community-centered interactive art prototype. Subsequently, a quasi-experimental design with a control site is utilized to evaluate the intervention. The population includes residents of two comparable urban neighborhoods, with a sample size of 150 participants recruited through stratified random sampling—75 from the intervention site and 75 from the control site.
