Thesis Abstract
This study investigates agro-education reform among Kenyan smallholder cooperative farmers, addressing the persistent gap between agricultural training provision and on-farm productivity, undergirded by concerns of limited farmer empowerment, capital access, and sustainability of extension services. The aim is to evaluate how recent agro-education reforms influence knowledge acquisition, adoption of climate-smart practices, and cooperative performance, with objectives to (1) assess changes in farmer knowledge and skills post-reform, (2) examine adoption rates of climate-smart and market-oriented practices, (3) identify drivers and barriers to adoption within cooperative structures, (4) analyze the relationship between education reform, cooperative governance, and farmer income, and (5) provide actionable recommendations for policy and practice. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach underpinned by the Diffusion of Innovations and Adult Learning theories, complemented by the Capability Approach to interpret changes in agency and empowerment. Data were collected from a stratified sample of 42 active smallholder cooperatives across Nakuru, Eldoret, and Makueni counties, with 630 farming households surveyed and 60 in-depth interviews conducted with cooperative managers, extension officers, and trainer-facilitators. A multi-stage sampling technique ensured representation of diverse agro-ecologies and cooperative sizes.
