Abstract
This thesis investigates the effectiveness of utilizing mobile technology to enhance agricultural extension services. The adoption of mobile technology in agriculture has the potential to revolutionize the way farmers access information, receive training, and improve their overall productivity. The study focuses on evaluating the impact of mobile technology on agricultural extension services, with a specific emphasis on its effectiveness in disseminating timely and relevant information to farmers. The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with farmers, agricultural extension workers, and technology providers. The study was conducted in rural agricultural communities, where mobile technology has been introduced to facilitate communication and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders. The findings of the study reveal that mobile technology has significantly improved the accessibility and timeliness of agricultural information for farmers. Through mobile applications, SMS alerts, and voice messages, farmers can now receive real-time updates on weather forecasts, market prices, pest outbreaks, and best agricultural practices. Additionally, mobile technology has facilitated communication between farmers and extension workers, enabling personalized advisory services and remote training sessions. Despite the positive impact of mobile technology on agricultural extension services, the study also identifies some challenges and limitations. These include issues related to digital literacy, network connectivity, language barriers, and the affordability of mobile devices and data plans. Moreover, the sustainability and scalability of mobile-based extension services require further attention to ensure long-term impact and effectiveness. In conclusion, the findings of this study underscore the potential of mobile technology to enhance agricultural extension services and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. By leveraging mobile platforms for information dissemination, training, and advisory services, agricultural extension programs can become more efficient, responsive, and inclusive. Recommendations for policy-makers, extension practitioners, and technology providers are provided to enhance the integration of mobile technology in agricultural extension services and maximize its benefits for farmers and the agricultural sector as a whole.
