Thesis Abstract

The rapid proliferation of digital technologies has underscored the importance of digital literacy as a critical component of adult learning, yet disparities persist between urban and rural populations, potentially impeding equitable access to digital opportunities. This study investigates the comparative levels of digital literacy among adults in urban and rural areas, aiming to identify the socio-cultural and infrastructural factors influencing digital competencies and to inform targeted interventions for bridging the digital divide. The specific objectives are to measure and compare digital literacy levels across the two settings, examine the determinants influencing these levels, and explore the role of institutional, technological, and individual factors in shaping digital skills among adults. Employing a cross-sectional survey research design, the study sampled 600 adults aged 25-60 years, equally divided between urban and rural communities in the region. The sample was selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representativeness across age groups, educational attainment, and socio-economic status. Data collection relied on a structured questionnaire incorporating the Digital Literacy Scale (DLS), which was adapted and validated for cultural relevance, alongside demographic and socio-economic variables. Standardised tests measuring functional digital skills, such as information retrieval, online communication, and digital content creation, supplemented self-reported data. Further, multiple regression analysis was employed to identify significant predictors of digital literacy levels, guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Digital Divide Framework. The anticipated key findings are that urban adults demonstrate significantly higher digital literacy levels than their rural counterparts, with disparities most prominent in digital content creation and advanced information sourcing. Factors positively associated with higher digital literacy include higher educational attainment, greater access to technological infrastructure, and exposure to formal digital training programs. Conversely, lack of reliable internet connectivity, limited digital literacy reinforcement opportunities, and socio-economic constraints serve as notable barriers in rural areas. The regression analysis is expected to reveal that infrastructural and educational factors collectively account for a substantial proportion of variance in digital literacy scores. It extends prior research by integrating socio-cultural, infrastructural, and individual determinants, thus offering a comprehensive understanding of the digital divide.
