Abstract
Tax evasion and tax avoidance have significant implications for the economy of Nigeria. This study aims to explore the impact of these practices on the Nigerian economy. Tax evasion involves illegal activities aimed at reducing tax liability, while tax avoidance refers to the legal exploitation of tax laws to minimize tax payments. Both practices have detrimental effects on government revenue, public services, and overall economic development. The research will investigate the extent of tax evasion and tax avoidance in Nigeria and analyze their effects on the government's fiscal policies. By examining the behavior of individuals and businesses in relation to tax compliance, this study will provide insights into the factors driving tax evasion and avoidance in the country. Additionally, the research will assess the effectiveness of existing tax laws and enforcement mechanisms in combating these practices. Furthermore, this study will evaluate the consequences of tax evasion and avoidance on the Nigerian economy, including their impact on government revenue and public service delivery. By quantifying the revenue losses due to these practices, the research will highlight the importance of addressing tax evasion and avoidance for sustainable economic growth and development. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on taxation in Nigeria and provide valuable insights for policymakers and tax authorities. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of tax data with qualitative research methods such as interviews and surveys. By gathering data from various sources, including tax records, official reports, and expert opinions, this study will offer a comprehensive analysis of the issue. The research will focus on both individual taxpayers and corporate entities to capture the full extent of tax evasion and avoidance in Nigeria. In conclusion, this study will shed light on the impact of tax evasion and tax avoidance on the Nigerian economy. By examining the prevalence of these practices, their underlying causes, and their consequences, the research will provide valuable insights for policymakers, tax authorities, and other stakeholders. Addressing tax evasion and avoidance is crucial for ensuring sustainable economic development and improving government revenue collection in Nigeria.
