Thesis Abstract
Abstract
This research project focuses on exploring the relationship between revenue allocation and political stability in Nigeria. The allocation of revenue in Nigeria has been a contentious issue due to the country's diverse ethnic and regional makeup. The revenue allocation formula in Nigeria has often been a source of political tension and instability, as different regions and ethnic groups vie for a larger share of the national resources. The study examines how the current revenue allocation system in Nigeria impacts political stability at both the national and sub-national levels. It analyzes the historical evolution of revenue allocation in Nigeria, from the pre-colonial era to the present day, to understand how past practices have shaped the current system. Furthermore, the research investigates the role of political elites, interest groups, and institutions in influencing revenue allocation decisions in Nigeria. It also assesses the extent to which the current revenue allocation formula addresses the developmental needs of different regions and promotes equitable distribution of resources. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of revenue allocation data with qualitative interviews and case studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand. By examining the perspectives of key stakeholders, including government officials, policymakers, and community leaders, the research aims to uncover the underlying factors that contribute to political instability in Nigeria. The findings of this research have significant implications for policymakers and practitioners seeking to promote political stability and sustainable development in Nigeria. By identifying the challenges and opportunities associated with revenue allocation, this study offers valuable insights for reforming the current system to better address the needs and aspirations of Nigeria's diverse population. Overall, this research project contributes to the existing literature on revenue allocation and political stability in Nigeria by providing a nuanced analysis of the complex interplay between fiscal federalism, governance, and conflict dynamics. It offers a holistic perspective on the challenges facing Nigeria's revenue allocation system and proposes recommendations for fostering greater political stability and social cohesion in the country.
