Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Climate change poses significant challenges to urban areas, affecting both their environmental sustainability and resilience. In response to these challenges, green infrastructure strategies have emerged as a promising approach to enhance climate change resilience in urban areas. This thesis aims to assess the effectiveness of green infrastructure strategies in enhancing climate change resilience in urban areas. The research is guided by the following objectives (1) to investigate the background of green infrastructure and its role in climate change resilience, (2) to identify the current problems facing urban areas in the context of climate change, (3) to evaluate the objectives of implementing green infrastructure strategies, (4) to analyze the limitations associated with the adoption of green infrastructure, (5) to determine the scope of green infrastructure strategies in urban areas, (6) to assess the significance of green infrastructure strategies for climate change resilience, and (7) to outline the structure of the thesis. Chapter two of the thesis provides a comprehensive literature review on green infrastructure strategies and climate change resilience in urban areas. This chapter examines ten key aspects related to the topic, including the definition and types of green infrastructure, the benefits of green infrastructure in urban settings, case studies on successful implementation of green infrastructure strategies, and the challenges and barriers to implementing green infrastructure in urban areas. Chapter three details the research methodology employed in this study. It includes the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. The methodology chapter comprises eight key components that guide the research process and ensure the reliability and validity of the findings. Chapter four presents an in-depth discussion of the research findings. This chapter critically analyzes the data collected through empirical research and examines how green infrastructure strategies contribute to enhancing climate change resilience in urban areas. The discussion covers various aspects such as the effectiveness of different green infrastructure approaches, the challenges faced in implementation, and the potential for scaling up green infrastructure strategies for broader impact. Finally, chapter five concludes the thesis by summarizing the key findings, discussing their implications for practice and policy, and offering recommendations for future research in the field of green infrastructure and climate change resilience in urban areas. The conclusion highlights the importance of integrating green infrastructure strategies into urban planning and design to build more sustainable and resilient cities in the face of climate change challenges. Overall, this thesis contributes to the existing literature by providing a detailed assessment of green infrastructure strategies for climate change resilience in urban areas. By evaluating the effectiveness, limitations, and significance of green infrastructure, this research offers valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders seeking to enhance the resilience of urban areas in the context of climate change.

Thesis Overview

The project titled "Assessment of Green Infrastructure Strategies for Climate Change Resilience in Urban Areas" aims to investigate and evaluate the effectiveness of green infrastructure strategies in enhancing climate change resilience within urban environments. With the increasing impacts of climate change, urban areas face significant challenges related to extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and environmental degradation. Green infrastructure, which includes natural and semi-natural components integrated within built environments, has been recognized as a sustainable approach to address these challenges by providing multiple benefits such as flood mitigation, heat island reduction, biodiversity conservation, and enhanced aesthetics. This research will focus on assessing the different green infrastructure strategies implemented in urban areas and their contributions to enhancing climate change resilience. The study will involve a comprehensive literature review to explore existing knowledge and best practices related to green infrastructure and climate change resilience. By synthesizing this information, the research aims to identify key concepts, principles, and factors that influence the effectiveness of green infrastructure strategies in urban settings. In addition, the project will involve field assessments and case studies of selected urban areas to evaluate the performance and impact of specific green infrastructure interventions. This empirical investigation will provide valuable insights into the actual benefits, challenges, and outcomes of implementing green infrastructure strategies for climate change resilience. Furthermore, the research will develop a framework for assessing the economic, environmental, and social implications of green infrastructure strategies in urban areas. By considering multiple dimensions of sustainability, the study aims to provide a holistic understanding of the potential trade-offs and co-benefits associated with green infrastructure implementation. Overall, this project seeks to contribute to the growing body of knowledge on green infrastructure and climate change resilience in urban areas. By evaluating the effectiveness of different strategies and providing practical insights for planning and decision-making, the research aims to support the development of more sustainable and resilient cities in the face of climate change challenges.
