Abstract
Urban renewal projects have been a fundamental aspect of urban planning, aimed at revitalizing deteriorating neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for residents. However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential negative impact of such projects on social equity, particularly in low-income neighborhoods. This thesis examines the impact of urban renewal projects on social equity in low-income neighborhoods, with a focus on understanding the various dimensions of social equity and how they are influenced by these projects. The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of demographic data with qualitative interviews and surveys to gather a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The study identified key factors that contribute to social equity, including access to affordable housing, quality education, healthcare services, and employment opportunities. These factors were assessed in the context of urban renewal projects to determine their impact on social equity outcomes. Findings from the study indicate that urban renewal projects have both positive and negative effects on social equity in low-income neighborhoods. While these projects can lead to improved infrastructure, increased property values, and enhanced community amenities, they also risk displacing vulnerable populations, exacerbating income inequality, and undermining social cohesion. The study highlights the importance of incorporating social equity considerations into urban planning processes to ensure that the benefits of urban renewal projects are equitably distributed among all residents. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into the complex relationship between urban renewal projects and social equity in low-income neighborhoods. By understanding the implications of these projects on social equity, policymakers and urban planners can develop more inclusive and sustainable strategies to address the diverse needs of residents in urban areas. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on urban development and social justice, emphasizing the importance of promoting equity and inclusivity in urban planning practices.
