Abstract
Citizen participation in local government decision-making processes is crucial for ensuring transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in governance. However, many local governments face challenges in effectively engaging citizens in decision-making. This thesis investigates the strategies that can enhance citizen participation in local government decision-making. The study is guided by the following objectives to examine the current state of citizen participation in local government decision-making, to identify the barriers to effective citizen participation, to explore best practices in enhancing citizen engagement, and to propose strategies for improving citizen participation in local government decision-making. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of terms. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review that examines existing studies, theories, and models related to citizen participation in local government decision-making. The review explores various factors influencing citizen engagement, such as communication channels, institutional frameworks, technological tools, and cultural considerations. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, including the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, and data analysis procedures. The chapter also discusses ethical considerations and limitations of the methodology. Chapter Four presents the findings of the research, highlighting the current state of citizen participation in local government decision-making, the identified barriers, best practices, and proposed strategies for enhancing citizen engagement. The chapter includes a detailed analysis of the data collected through surveys, interviews, and document reviews. In Chapter Five, the conclusion and summary of the thesis are presented, drawing on the key findings and implications of the study. The chapter discusses the significance of the research findings for local government practitioners, policymakers, and researchers. Recommendations for future research and practical implications for enhancing citizen participation in local government decision-making are also provided. Overall, this thesis contributes to the existing body of knowledge on citizen participation in local government decision-making by offering insights into effective strategies that can be adopted to enhance citizen engagement.
