Abstract
This thesis investigates the imperative need to enhance citizen engagement in local government decision-making processes through a detailed case study analysis. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the importance of involving citizens in governance to ensure transparency, accountability, and effectiveness in public administration. However, challenges persist in effectively engaging citizens in local government decision-making processes, leading to potential gaps in democratic governance. This study aims to address these challenges by examining the current state of citizen engagement practices in a specific local government setting and proposing strategies for improvement. The introductory chapter sets the stage by providing an overview of the research topic, background information, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. Chapter two presents a comprehensive literature review covering ten key themes related to citizen engagement, local government decision-making, participatory governance, and best practices in citizen involvement. This review provides a theoretical framework for understanding the complexities and dynamics of citizen engagement in the context of local governance.
