The advent of social media has revolutionized the way individuals communicate, connect, and interact globally. While social media platforms offer numerous benefits, concerns have emerged regarding their potential negative impact on mental health. This cross-cultural study aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health across different cultural contexts. The research seeks to explore how social media use influences mental health outcomes, including symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress, among individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data. A sample of participants from various cultural backgrounds will be recruited to participate in the study, providing insights into how social media use affects mental health outcomes differently across cultures. The research will examine factors such as social media usage patterns, content consumption, online interactions, and self-perceptions to understand the complex relationship between social media and mental health. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, background information, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance of the study, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review focusing on ten key themes related to social media and mental health, drawing on existing research and theoretical perspectives to contextualize the study within the current literature.
