Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The oceans are vast ecosystems that harbor a diverse array of microorganisms, many of which remain unexplored. In recent years, there has been growing interest in investigating the antimicrobial potential of marine microorganisms, as they represent a largely untapped resource for the discovery of novel antimicrobial compounds. This thesis presents a comprehensive exploration of the antimicrobial potential of marine microorganisms, with a focus on identifying and characterizing bioactive compounds that exhibit antimicrobial properties. The study begins with a detailed introduction to the topic, providing background information on the importance of antimicrobial compounds, the challenges posed by antimicrobial resistance, and the potential of marine microorganisms as a source of novel antimicrobial agents. The problem statement highlights the urgent need for new antimicrobial compounds to combat the rise of drug-resistant pathogens, setting the stage for the objectives of the study. The main objectives of this research are to isolate marine microorganisms from different marine environments, screen them for antimicrobial activity against a panel of clinically relevant pathogens, and identify the bioactive compounds responsible for the observed antimicrobial effects. The study also aims to investigate the mechanisms of action of these compounds and evaluate their potential as future antimicrobial agents. The limitations of the study include the constraints of working with complex marine microbial communities, the challenges of isolating and characterizing bioactive compounds, and the need for further research to fully elucidate the antimicrobial potential of marine microorganisms. The scope of the study encompasses both laboratory-based experiments and computational analyses to explore the diversity of marine microorganisms and their bioactive compounds. The significance of this research lies in its potential to contribute to the development of new antimicrobial therapies that could help address the global health threat posed by antimicrobial resistance. By harnessing the antimicrobial potential of marine microorganisms, this study has the potential to uncover novel compounds with unique mechanisms of action that could lead to the discovery of new classes of antimicrobial agents. The structure of the thesis is organized into five chapters. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the topic, background information, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and definition of terms. Chapter 2 presents a comprehensive literature review on antimicrobial compounds from marine microorganisms. Chapter 3 details the research methodology, including the isolation and screening of marine microorganisms, bioassays for antimicrobial activity, compound identification techniques, and data analysis methods. Chapter 4 presents a thorough discussion of the findings, including the identification of bioactive compounds, their antimicrobial activity, and potential mechanisms of action. Finally, Chapter 5 offers a conclusion and summary of the project thesis, highlighting the key findings, implications, and future directions for research in this field. In conclusion, this thesis aims to explore the antimicrobial potential of marine microorganisms and contribute to the discovery of new antimicrobial compounds that could help combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. Through a multidisciplinary approach that combines microbiology, chemistry, and bioinformatics, this research seeks to uncover the hidden treasures of the ocean and unlock their potential for addressing one of the most pressing challenges in modern medicine.
