Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, often resulting in physical impairments that require extensive rehabilitation to regain function and independence. Traditional physical therapy approaches can be challenging and monotonous for stroke survivors, leading to decreased motivation and engagement in the rehabilitation process. Virtual Reality (VR) technology has emerged as a promising tool in physical therapy for stroke rehabilitation, offering immersive and interactive environments that can enhance engagement, motivation, and outcomes for patients. This thesis explores the use of VR technology in physical therapy for stroke rehabilitation, aiming to investigate its effectiveness, benefits, challenges, and future implications. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, background information on stroke rehabilitation, the problem statement regarding the limitations of traditional physical therapy methods, the objectives of the study, the scope and limitations of the research, the significance of the study, the structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review, encompassing ten key themes related to the use of VR technology in stroke rehabilitation. This chapter explores existing research studies, theoretical frameworks, technological advancements, clinical applications, patient experiences, and outcomes associated with VR-based physical therapy interventions for stroke survivors. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, including the research design, participant recruitment criteria, data collection methods, data analysis techniques, ethical considerations, and potential limitations. This chapter also discusses the rationale behind the chosen methodology and its alignment with the research objectives. Chapter Four presents a detailed discussion of the findings derived from the research study, focusing on the effectiveness of VR technology in improving physical outcomes, enhancing patient engagement, enhancing motivation, and addressing challenges faced in stroke rehabilitation. This chapter also explores the implications of the findings for clinical practice, research, and future developments in the field of VR-based physical therapy. Chapter Five offers a conclusion and summary of the thesis, highlighting key findings, implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research and practice. This chapter provides a synthesis of the research outcomes and their significance in advancing the use of VR technology in physical therapy for stroke rehabilitation. Overall, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the application of VR technology in stroke rehabilitation, offering insights into its potential benefits, challenges, and implications for improving outcomes and quality of life for stroke survivors. The findings of this research have important implications for healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders involved in the field of physical therapy and stroke rehabilitation.
