Thesis Abstract

Abstract
White star apple (Chrysophyllum albidum) is a tropical fruit commonly found in West Africa and is known for its nutritional and medicinal properties. This study focused on the extraction, characterization, and antimicrobial screening of white star apple seed oil. The seed oil was extracted using a solvent extraction method and characterized using various analytical techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The antimicrobial activity of the seed oil was evaluated against a panel of pathogenic microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. Additionally, the phytochemical and antimicrobial analysis of mistletoe leaves was also conducted in this study. Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant known for its traditional medicinal uses. The leaves were subjected to extraction to obtain the bioactive compounds, which were then analyzed using chromatographic techniques. The antimicrobial activity of the mistletoe leaf extract was assessed against a range of bacterial strains to determine its potential as a natural antimicrobial agent. The results of the study revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds in the white star apple seed oil, including fatty acids, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids. The seed oil exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungal strains. These findings suggest the potential of white star apple seed oil as a natural antimicrobial agent that could be explored for various pharmaceutical and industrial applications. Furthermore, the phytochemical analysis of mistletoe leaves identified the presence of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, tannins, and saponins. The antimicrobial screening showed promising results, indicating the potential of mistletoe leaf extract as an effective antimicrobial agent. This study contributes to the growing body of research on natural products with antimicrobial properties, highlighting the importance of exploring traditional medicinal plants for their therapeutic potential. In conclusion, the extraction, characterization, and antimicrobial screening of white star apple seed oil, as well as the phytochemical and antimicrobial analysis of mistletoe leaves, provide valuable insights into the bioactive compounds present in these natural products. The findings suggest the potential of white star apple seed oil and mistletoe leaf extract as natural antimicrobial agents that could be further developed for pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
