Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The prevalence of obesity has reached alarming levels globally, posing significant health challenges and economic burdens. Emerging research suggests a potential link between gut microbiota composition and metabolic health, offering a promising avenue for novel therapeutic interventions. This thesis investigates the effects of probiotics supplementation on gut microbiota composition and metabolic health in individuals with obesity. The study aims to elucidate the intricate relationship between probiotics, gut microbiota, and metabolic parameters, providing valuable insights into the potential therapeutic benefits of probiotics in managing obesity-related metabolic disturbances. Chapter One provides the foundation for the research study, beginning with an Introduction (1.1) that outlines the background of the study (1.2) and presents the problem statement (1.3) highlighting the pressing need for effective interventions in managing obesity-related metabolic disorders. The objectives of the study (1.4) are clearly defined, along with the limitations (1.5) and scope (1.6) of the research. The significance of the study (1.7) in advancing our understanding of the role of probiotics in metabolic health is discussed, and the structure of the thesis (1.8) is outlined. Lastly, key terms (1.9) essential for understanding the thesis are defined. Chapter Two entails a comprehensive Literature Review, covering ten key areas related to the effects of probiotics supplementation on gut microbiota composition and metabolic health in individuals with obesity. This chapter synthesizes existing research findings, providing a thorough understanding of the current state of knowledge in the field. Chapter Three delves into the Research Methodology, detailing the research design, participants, data collection methods, and analytical procedures employed in the study. This chapter includes sections on sampling procedures, data collection instruments, data analysis techniques, and ethical considerations, among others, to ensure the robustness and validity of the findings. Chapter Four presents an in-depth Discussion of Findings, where the results of the study are analyzed and interpreted in the context of existing literature. The effects of probiotics supplementation on gut microbiota composition and metabolic health parameters in individuals with obesity are critically assessed, providing valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying these effects. Chapter Five serves as the Conclusion and Summary of the thesis, encapsulating the key findings, implications, and recommendations derived from the research study. The conclusions drawn from the study are summarized, and future research directions are proposed to further elucidate the role of probiotics in managing obesity-related metabolic health issues. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the effects of probiotics supplementation on gut microbiota composition and metabolic health in individuals with obesity. By shedding light on the potential therapeutic benefits of probiotics, this research seeks to inform clinical practice and public health strategies aimed at addressing the escalating burden of obesity and associated metabolic disorders.

Thesis Overview

The project titled "Effect of Probiotics Supplementation on Gut Microbiota Composition and Metabolic Health in Individuals with Obesity" aims to investigate the potential impact of probiotics supplementation on gut microbiota composition and metabolic health in individuals who are obese. Obesity is a global health concern associated with various metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and inflammation, that can increase the risk of developing chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The human gut microbiota, composed of trillions of microorganisms, plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health and metabolic homeostasis. Imbalances in gut microbiota composition, known as dysbiosis, have been linked to obesity and related metabolic disturbances. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits to the host by modulating the gut microbiota and improving metabolic functions. This research project will delve into the existing literature to review the current understanding of the relationship between gut microbiota, obesity, and metabolic health. It will explore the mechanisms by which probiotics may influence gut microbiota composition and metabolic parameters in individuals with obesity. The project will also investigate the potential of probiotics to mitigate obesity-related metabolic complications and improve overall health outcomes. The methodology will involve a randomized controlled trial where individuals with obesity will be supplemented with a specific probiotic strain for a defined period. Various parameters, including gut microbiota composition, metabolic markers (such as glucose metabolism, lipid profile, and inflammation markers), and anthropometric measurements, will be assessed before and after the intervention. The findings will be analyzed to determine the impact of probiotics supplementation on gut microbiota composition and metabolic health in individuals with obesity. The significance of this research lies in its potential to contribute to the development of novel strategies for managing obesity and associated metabolic disorders. By elucidating the effects of probiotics on gut microbiota and metabolic health, this study may pave the way for personalized interventions targeting the gut microbiota to improve metabolic outcomes in individuals with obesity. Ultimately, the findings of this research could have implications for the prevention and management of obesity-related complications, leading to better health outcomes and quality of life for affected individuals.
