Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. The gut microbiota has been implicated in the pathogenesis of IBS, with dysbiosis playing a significant role in symptom manifestation. Probiotics, live microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts, have shown promise in managing IBS symptoms. This thesis aimed to investigate the effect of probiotics supplementation on gut microbiota composition in individuals with IBS. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to provide background information on IBS, gut microbiota dysbiosis, and the potential mechanisms of probiotics in alleviating IBS symptoms. The research methodology involved a randomized controlled trial where participants with IBS were assigned to either a probiotics supplementation group or a placebo group for a specified duration. The findings of the study revealed significant changes in gut microbiota composition in individuals with IBS following probiotics supplementation. Specifically, there was an increase in beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, along with a decrease in pathogenic bacteria. These changes were associated with improvements in IBS symptoms, including reduced abdominal pain and bloating, and improved bowel habits. The discussion of the findings highlighted the potential mechanisms through which probiotics exert their beneficial effects on gut microbiota composition and symptom management in individuals with IBS. The implications of these findings for clinical practice and future research were also discussed. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into the role of probiotics supplementation in modulating gut microbiota composition and alleviating symptoms in individuals with IBS. The results underscore the potential of probiotics as a safe and effective therapeutic approach for managing IBS. Further research is warranted to elucidate the specific strains and dosages of probiotics that offer the most benefit to individuals with IBS.
