Thesis Abstract

This thesis investigates the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity in rural communities, focusing on the implications for food security, economic development, and sustainable livelihoods. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of climate data with qualitative assessments of farmer perceptions and adaptation strategies. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, outlining the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. The chapter sets the stage for the investigation into the complex interactions between climate change and agricultural productivity in rural settings. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review on climate change impacts on agriculture, exploring existing research on the subject. The review covers ten key themes, including the effects of temperature changes, precipitation variability, extreme weather events, soil degradation, water scarcity, crop yields, pest and disease incidence, adaptation strategies, policy interventions, and the socio-economic implications for rural communities. Chapter Three details the research methodology employed in the study, including the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. The chapter outlines the eight key components of the research methodology, providing a transparent and systematic approach to investigating the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity in rural communities. Chapter Four presents a detailed discussion of the research findings, highlighting the key insights gleaned from the data analysis and farmer interviews.
