Abstract
Mental health challenges are prevalent among college athletes, who face unique pressures and demands related to their academic and athletic pursuits. While the importance of physical health is often emphasized in athletic programs, mental health education and support remain underrepresented. This research aims to develop and evaluate a comprehensive health education program designed to promote mental health awareness and support among college athletes.
The study will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from surveys and assessments with qualitative data from focus groups and interviews. The research will involve the development and implementation of a comprehensive health education program that addresses topics such as stress management, burnout prevention, help-seeking behaviors, and stigma reduction. The program's effectiveness will be evaluated through pre- and post-intervention assessments of mental health literacy, attitudes, and help-seeking behaviors among college athletes.
The findings will contribute to the understanding of effective strategies for promoting mental health awareness and support within athletic programs and inform the development of future interventions tailored to the unique needs and experiences of college athletes.
Chapter 1: Introduction
Background
College athletes face unique challenges and pressures that can impact their mental health and well-being. The demanding schedules, intense competition, and high expectations associated with collegiate athletics can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and burnout1. Additionally, the stigma surrounding mental health issues and the culture of toughness in sports can create barriers to seeking help and accessing support services2.
While physical health and injury prevention are integral components of athletic programs, mental health education and support often receive less attention. However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of addressing mental health concerns among college athletes to promote their overall well-being and performance.
Significance of the Study This study aims to contribute to the development and evaluation of a comprehensive health education program designed to promote mental health awareness and support among college athletes. By addressing the unique challenges and experiences of this population, the research will provide valuable insights into effective strategies for delivering mental health education and fostering a supportive environment within athletic programs.
The findings of this study have the potential to inform the development and implementation of mental health initiatives tailored to the needs of college athletes. By identifying effective components and strategies for mental health education, athletic departments, coaches, and support staff can better equip athletes with the knowledge and resources to manage stress, recognize signs of mental health concerns, and seek appropriate support when needed.
