Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This study focuses on the assessment of groundwater quality and contamination in an urban area, aiming to investigate the potential sources of contamination, the extent of pollution, and its impact on human health and the environment. Groundwater is a vital natural resource that serves as a primary source of drinking water for many communities globally. However, due to increasing urbanization and industrial activities, groundwater quality is at risk of contamination, posing significant challenges for sustainable water management. The research methodology employed in this study includes field surveys, water sampling, laboratory analysis, and data interpretation to assess the physical, chemical, and biological parameters of groundwater quality. The study area selected for this research is a rapidly urbanizing region with diverse land uses, including residential, commercial, and industrial activities. Through the collection and analysis of groundwater samples from various locations within the study area, the study aims to identify potential sources of contamination, such as industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and urban waste disposal. The literature review provides a comprehensive overview of previous studies on groundwater quality assessment, contamination sources, and remediation strategies. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on groundwater quality management and provide valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and environmental agencies. The results of the study reveal the presence of various contaminants in groundwater, including heavy metals, nitrates, pesticides, and organic pollutants, exceeding permissible limits set by regulatory standards. The spatial distribution of contamination sources and the extent of pollution are mapped using Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to visualize the vulnerability of groundwater resources in the urban area. The discussion of findings highlights the implications of groundwater contamination on public health, ecosystem integrity, and water resource sustainability. The study emphasizes the need for effective monitoring and management strategies to mitigate groundwater pollution and protect human health and the environment. Recommendations for remediation measures, regulatory enforcement, and public awareness campaigns are proposed to address the challenges of groundwater contamination in urban areas. In conclusion, this research contributes to the understanding of groundwater quality and contamination issues in urban areas and underscores the importance of sustainable water management practices. The study calls for collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including government agencies, industries, and local communities, to safeguard groundwater resources for present and future generations. Ultimately, the findings of this study advocate for proactive measures to protect and preserve groundwater quality as a critical component of water security and environmental sustainability in urban settings.
