Abstract
The urban heat island (UHI) effect is a phenomenon where urban areas experience higher temperatures compared to their rural surroundings, primarily due to human activities and the built environment. This research project focuses on analyzing the UHI effect in a developing city through a case study approach. The selected developing city provides a unique context to investigate the spatial and temporal dynamics of UHI and its implications on the urban environment and residents. Chapter One of the thesis provides an introduction to the research topic, background information on the UHI effect, the problem statement, objectives of the study, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. The chapter sets the stage for understanding the importance of studying the UHI effect in a developing city. Chapter Two consists of a comprehensive literature review that delves into existing research on UHI effects, particularly in urban areas. The review covers various aspects such as the causes of UHI, impacts on human health and the environment, mitigation strategies, and case studies from different cities around the world.
