Abstract
Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) have become a pressing issue in urban areas worldwide due to their adverse effects on human health, the environment, and energy consumption. This thesis investigates the causes, impacts, and potential mitigation strategies of UHIs to provide valuable insights for urban planners and policymakers. The study aims to enhance our understanding of UHIs and contribute to the development of sustainable urban environments. The introduction provides a background of UHIs, highlighting the increasing urbanization trends and the associated rise in temperatures in cities. The problem statement emphasizes the urgency of addressing UHIs to minimize their detrimental effects on urban residents and the environment. The objectives of the study are to identify the primary causes of UHIs, assess their impacts on urban areas, and evaluate the effectiveness of various mitigation strategies. The literature review delves into ten key aspects related to UHIs, including the urban heat island phenomenon, contributing factors such as land use changes and anthropogenic heat emissions, and the impacts on human health, biodiversity, and energy consumption. The review also examines existing mitigation strategies, such as green infrastructure, cool roofs, and urban planning interventions, to mitigate UHIs.
