Thesis Abstract

**Abstract
** Urbanization is a phenomenon that significantly affects the environment, with potential implications on groundwater quality. This study investigates the environmental impact of urbanization on groundwater quality in a developing city. The research focuses on understanding how rapid urbanization processes, such as population growth, infrastructure development, and land use changes, influence groundwater quality. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining field surveys, water quality analysis, and GIS mapping to assess the current state of groundwater quality in the study area. The research findings reveal a concerning degradation of groundwater quality in the developing city due to urbanization activities. High levels of contaminants such as nitrates, heavy metals, and organic pollutants were detected in groundwater samples collected from various locations across the city. The study identifies specific sources of contamination, including industrial activities, improper waste disposal, and urban runoff. Furthermore, the analysis indicates a direct correlation between urbanization intensity and groundwater pollution levels. In addition to identifying the environmental risks associated with urbanization, the study also explores potential mitigation measures to safeguard groundwater quality in the developing city. Recommendations include improved land use planning, stricter regulations on industrial discharges, and enhanced monitoring systems for groundwater quality. Furthermore, community engagement and public awareness campaigns are proposed as essential strategies to promote sustainable urban development practices and protect groundwater resources. The significance of this research lies in its contribution to the understanding of the complex interactions between urbanization and groundwater quality in developing cities. By shedding light on the environmental consequences of rapid urban growth, the study provides valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and environmental practitioners to formulate effective strategies for sustainable urban development. Ultimately, the findings of this research aim to support the conservation and management of groundwater resources in the face of urbanization pressures, ensuring the long-term environmental sustainability of the developing city. In conclusion, this thesis underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to address the environmental impact of urbanization on groundwater quality. By integrating scientific analysis with policy recommendations, the study offers a comprehensive framework for sustainable urban development that prioritizes the protection of groundwater resources. Through collaborative efforts and informed decision-making, it is possible to mitigate the negative effects of urbanization and promote a healthier environment for current and future generations in developing cities.
