Abstract
This thesis examines the impact of social media on mental health through a cross-cultural analysis. Social media has become an integral part of daily life for many individuals, providing platforms for communication, information sharing, and social interaction. However, concerns have been raised about the potential negative effects of social media use on mental health, including increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. This study aims to explore how social media use influences mental health outcomes across different cultures, taking into account cultural norms, values, and practices. The research begins with a comprehensive review of relevant literature on the relationship between social media and mental health. Ten key themes emerged from the literature review, highlighting the various ways in which social media can impact mental health outcomes. These themes include social comparison, cyberbullying, fear of missing out (FOMO), self-esteem, body image, sleep disturbances, online harassment, addiction, privacy concerns, and emotional well-being. The research methodology section outlines the design and approach of the study, including the selection of participants, data collection methods, and analysis techniques. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between social media use and mental health across different cultural contexts. The research sample includes participants from diverse cultural backgrounds, allowing for a comparative analysis of social media effects on mental health. The findings chapter presents the results of the study, highlighting the key findings related to social media use and mental health outcomes. The analysis reveals both positive and negative impacts of social media on mental health, with differences observed across cultural groups. Factors such as cultural values, norms, and social support systems play a significant role in moderating the effects of social media on mental health. The discussion chapter delves into the implications of the findings, considering the broader social and psychological consequences of social media use on mental health. The chapter also discusses practical recommendations for promoting positive mental health outcomes in the context of social media use, taking into account cultural diversity and individual differences. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to our understanding of the complex relationship between social media and mental health across diverse cultural contexts. By exploring the nuanced ways in which social media influences mental health outcomes, this study provides valuable insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking to address the challenges and opportunities associated with social media use in the digital age.
