Abstract
This thesis investigates the potential of utilizing food by-products to develop sustainable food packaging materials within the field of food technology. The global food industry generates a substantial amount of by-products, leading to environmental challenges. This study aims to address this issue by exploring innovative ways to repurpose these by-products into biodegradable and environmentally friendly packaging materials. The research is structured into five main chapters to provide a comprehensive analysis of the topic. Chapter One introduces the research by presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definition of key terms. Chapter Two conducts a thorough literature review, examining existing studies on food by-products, sustainable packaging materials, recycling initiatives, and relevant technological advancements. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology, including the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. This chapter also discusses the selection criteria for food by-products, processing techniques, and material testing protocols. In Chapter Four, the findings of the study are discussed in detail. The results of material characterization, mechanical properties testing, biodegradability assessments, and barrier performance evaluations are presented and analyzed. The chapter also explores the economic feasibility and scalability of the developed packaging materials.
