Abstract:

This research project examines the environmental impacts of various religious institutions and practices. It explores how different faiths approach environmental stewardship and sustainability within their buildings, operations, and rituals. Case studies of religious sites are analyzed to understand their resource and energy usage, waste generation, and land management approaches. Comparisons are made between faiths that emphasize humanity's connection with nature versus those that view humans as separate from or dominant over the natural world. Policy recommendations are developed for houses of worship seeking to reduce their environmental footprints and better care for creation.
