Abstract
This study examines the environmental impacts of operations and activities carried out by nonprofit organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). It analyzes the direct and indirect environmental footprint of different types of nonprofits across sectors such as conservation, international aid, advocacy, arts/culture, and community services. Office operations, transportation, events, programming, materials procurement and waste are all considered. The goal is to understand how to measure and minimize the environmental impacts of these important social organizations, while still achieving their missions of improving lives and communities. Recommendations are provided for strategies nonprofits can adopt to green their operations and become more sustainable and environmentally responsible.
