Abstract
The rapid urbanization and population growth experienced in recent decades have led to an increase in waste generation and management challenges in urban areas. The inadequate and unsustainable waste management practices in many urban centers have resulted in environmental pollution, health hazards, and resource depletion. Therefore, this study aims to assess sustainable waste management practices in urban areas to identify effective strategies for improving waste management systems. Chapter One of the thesis provides an introduction to the research topic, including the background, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and structure of the study. The chapter also defines key terms relevant to the research. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review on sustainable waste management practices in urban areas, covering ten key areas identified in the existing body of knowledge. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, detailing the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, ethical considerations, and limitations of the methodology. The chapter also discusses the theoretical framework that guides the research process. In Chapter Four, the findings of the study are presented and discussed in detail.
