Abstract
The management of waste in urban areas has become a critical environmental issue globally due to the increasing population and rapid urbanization. This study aims to assess the sustainable waste management practices in urban areas, focusing on effective methods to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste to minimize environmental impact and promote a cleaner and healthier living environment. The research methodology involved a comprehensive literature review, data collection, and analysis of waste management practices in selected urban areas. The findings revealed various challenges and opportunities in waste management, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of awareness, and improper waste disposal practices. Strategies such as waste segregation, composting, and community engagement were identified as key components of sustainable waste management practices. The discussion of findings highlighted the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, policy interventions, and technological innovations to enhance waste management efficiency. The study concludes by emphasizing the significance of adopting sustainable waste management practices to achieve environmental sustainability and improve the quality of life in urban areas. The findings of this research contribute to the existing body of knowledge on waste management and provide insights for policymakers, urban planners, and environmental practitioners to develop effective strategies for sustainable waste management in urban areas.

Thesis Overview

The project titled "Assessment of Sustainable Waste Management Practices in Urban Areas" aims to investigate and evaluate the current waste management practices in urban areas with a focus on sustainability. Waste management is a critical issue in urban settings as the rapid urbanization and population growth lead to increased waste generation, posing significant environmental and health risks. By assessing the existing waste management practices, this research seeks to identify areas for improvement and propose sustainable solutions to address the challenges faced in urban waste management. The research will begin with a comprehensive review of the literature on waste management practices in urban areas, highlighting the importance of sustainable waste management and the key factors influencing the effectiveness of waste management systems. This review will provide a theoretical framework for understanding the complexities of waste management in urban settings and guide the research methodology. The methodology for this research will involve a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, including surveys, interviews, and site visits to gather data on waste generation, collection, treatment, and disposal practices in selected urban areas. The data collected will be analyzed to identify patterns, trends, and challenges in waste management practices, with a particular focus on sustainability criteria such as resource efficiency, environmental impact, and social equity. The findings of this research will be presented in chapter four, where the analysis of the data will be used to evaluate the current state of waste management practices in urban areas and assess their sustainability. The discussion will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of existing waste management systems, identify barriers to sustainability, and propose recommendations for enhancing the sustainability of waste management practices in urban areas. In conclusion, this research aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve waste management practices in urban areas by providing valuable insights and recommendations for implementing sustainable solutions. By addressing the challenges of waste management in urban settings, this research seeks to promote environmental conservation, public health, and overall quality of life in urban communities.
