Abstract
The effective management of waste in urban areas is crucial for promoting environmental sustainability and public health. This thesis presents an assessment of sustainable waste management practices in urban areas, focusing on strategies to reduce waste generation, improve waste collection and disposal methods, and promote recycling and resource recovery. The study aims to evaluate the current waste management practices in urban areas, identify challenges and opportunities for improvement, and propose recommendations for enhancing sustainability in waste management. The research methodology involves a comprehensive literature review to examine existing studies, reports, and best practices in waste management. Data collection methods include surveys, interviews, and site visits to assess the current waste management infrastructure, policies, and practices in selected urban areas. The study also incorporates quantitative analysis to measure waste generation rates, recycling rates, and waste composition to provide a baseline for comparison and evaluation. The findings reveal that urban areas face significant challenges in managing waste effectively, including inadequate infrastructure, limited resources, and lack of public awareness and participation. However, the study also identifies several promising practices and initiatives that have been successful in promoting sustainable waste management, such as community-based recycling programs, waste-to-energy technologies, and public-private partnerships. The discussion of findings highlights the importance of adopting integrated waste management approaches that combine waste reduction, recycling, composting, and energy recovery to minimize environmental impacts and maximize resource efficiency. The study emphasizes the need for policy interventions, public education campaigns, and stakeholder engagement to promote sustainable waste management practices in urban areas. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on sustainable waste management practices in urban areas and provides valuable insights and recommendations for policymakers, urban planners, and waste management professionals. By implementing the proposed recommendations, urban areas can improve their waste management systems, reduce environmental pollution, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
