Abstract
Microplastics, small plastic particles less than 5mm in size, have become a significant environmental concern globally. This study focuses on the assessment of microplastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems and its impact on aquatic organisms. The presence of microplastics in freshwater systems poses a threat to the health of aquatic organisms and the overall ecosystem. This research aims to investigate the sources, distribution, and abundance of microplastics in freshwater environments and to assess their potential impacts on aquatic organisms. The first chapter provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. The second chapter consists of a comprehensive literature review covering ten key aspects related to microplastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems. This includes discussions on the sources of microplastics, their distribution in water bodies, the potential ecological impacts, and current mitigation strategies.
