Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Urban stormwater management is a critical aspect of environmental sustainability in modern cities. The use of green infrastructure has gained significant attention as a sustainable approach to managing stormwater runoff while providing additional benefits such as improved air quality, enhanced aesthetics, and increased biodiversity. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of green infrastructure in urban stormwater management, focusing on its impact on mitigating flooding, reducing pollution, and enhancing overall urban resilience. The study begins with a comprehensive review of existing literature on green infrastructure, stormwater management, and urban sustainability to establish a theoretical framework for the research. The literature review highlights the various types of green infrastructure, their design principles, and their potential benefits and challenges in urban contexts. The research methodology involves a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis and qualitative assessments. Data collection methods include site visits, surveys, and interviews with stakeholders involved in green infrastructure planning and implementation. The study area selected for this research is a rapidly urbanizing city with a history of stormwater management challenges. The findings of the study reveal the effectiveness of green infrastructure in reducing stormwater runoff volume, improving water quality, and enhancing urban biodiversity. The analysis of quantitative data demonstrates the significant reduction in peak flows and pollutant loads in areas where green infrastructure interventions have been implemented. Qualitative assessments provide insights into the social acceptance and perceptions of green infrastructure among residents and policymakers. The discussion of findings explores the implications of the research results for urban planning, policy-making, and sustainable development. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating green infrastructure into urban design and planning processes to address the challenges of climate change, urbanization, and environmental degradation. In conclusion, this research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on green infrastructure and its role in urban stormwater management. The findings underscore the importance of adopting a holistic and integrated approach to sustainable urban development, emphasizing the multiple benefits of green infrastructure beyond stormwater management. Recommendations for future research and policy implications are provided to guide further advancements in green infrastructure implementation and urban sustainability. Keywords Green infrastructure, Urban stormwater management, Sustainability, Flooding, Water quality, Biodiversity, Urban resilience.
