Abstract
This thesis critically examines the representation of mental health in contemporary African literature. The portrayal of mental health in literary works serves as a reflection of societal attitudes, beliefs, and experiences regarding mental well-being within the African context. Through an analysis of various literary texts, this research seeks to understand how mental health issues are depicted, explored, and interpreted in African literature, and the implications of these representations on society. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, presenting the background of the study, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and the structure of the thesis. It also includes definitions of key terms relevant to the study. Chapter Two consists of a comprehensive literature review that examines existing works on mental health representation in African literature. The review covers various themes, trends, and perspectives in the portrayal of mental health issues in literary texts from different regions within Africa. Chapter Three focuses on the research methodology employed in this study. It discusses the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, and data analysis procedures used to gather and analyze information related to the portrayal of mental health in contemporary African literature. Chapter Four presents a detailed discussion of the findings derived from the analysis of selected literary texts. This chapter explores the different ways in which mental health is depicted, the role of characters in addressing mental health issues, and the impact of cultural and societal factors on the representation of mental well-being. Chapter Five offers a conclusion and summary of the research findings. In conclusion, this thesis contributes to the ongoing conversation about mental health representation in African literature.
