Abstract
The representation of gender roles in literature has been a subject of significant scholarly interest, particularly within the context of African literature. This thesis explores how gender roles are portrayed in contemporary African literature, examining the complex interplay of cultural, social, and historical factors that shape these representations. Through a comprehensive analysis of selected works by African authors, this study seeks to uncover the underlying ideologies, power dynamics, and societal norms that influence the depiction of gender in literary texts. The introductory chapter sets the stage for the study by providing a background of the research area and outlining the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, and structure of the thesis. Additionally, key terms and concepts related to gender roles in African literature are defined to establish a common understanding for the reader. Chapter two presents a detailed literature review that synthesizes existing scholarship on gender roles in African literature. The review covers a range of themes, including masculinity, femininity, gender stereotypes, power dynamics, and representations of gender in different genres and historical periods. By critically engaging with previous studies, this chapter lays the foundation for the empirical analysis that follows. Chapter three outlines the research methodology employed in this study, including the selection of primary texts, data collection methods, and analytical frameworks.
