This thesis investigates the representation of gender in contemporary African literature, focusing on how writers depict gender roles, stereotypes, and power dynamics in their works. The study aims to explore the complexities of gender relations in African society as portrayed in literary texts and to analyze the ways in which these representations reflect and challenge prevailing social norms and expectations. Drawing on a diverse range of African literary works from different regions and periods, the research employs a combination of qualitative content analysis and literary criticism to examine the portrayal of gender in various contexts and genres. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the research, presenting the background of the study, stating the problem statement, outlining the objectives, discussing the limitations and scope of the study, highlighting the significance of the research, and presenting the structure of the thesis. Chapter Two offers a comprehensive literature review, analyzing existing scholarship on gender representation in African literature, and identifying key themes and patterns in the portrayal of gender roles and relationships.
