Abstract
This thesis examines the theme of identity and self-discovery in contemporary African literature. The exploration of identity and self-discovery is a recurring motif in African literary works, reflecting the complex and multifaceted nature of individual and collective experiences on the continent. Through a comprehensive analysis of selected literary texts, this study seeks to uncover the various ways in which African writers portray and interrogate issues of identity, self-awareness, and personal growth within the context of a rapidly changing and diverse society. Chapter One provides the groundwork for this study, beginning with an introduction to the topic, followed by a background of the study that contextualizes the importance of exploring identity and self-discovery in African literature. The chapter also outlines the problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance of the study, and defines key terms to guide the reader through the research. Chapter Two delves into a detailed literature review that examines existing scholarly works on the theme of identity and self-discovery in African literature. This chapter presents a synthesis of relevant studies, theories, and critical perspectives that inform the analysis of contemporary literary texts. Chapter Three focuses on the research methodology employed in this study, outlining the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, and data analysis procedures.
