Abstract
This research project aims to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among teenagers. Social media has become an integral part of young people's lives, with the majority of teenagers using platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter on a daily basis. While social media offers numerous benefits, including facilitating communication and connecting individuals from around the world, there is growing concern about its potential negative effects on mental health. The research will explore the various ways in which social media can influence teenagers' mental well-being. This will include examining the relationship between social media use and issues such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, body image concerns, and cyberbullying. By conducting a thorough literature review and analyzing existing studies on the topic, the project aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the impact of social media on adolescent mental health. Moreover, the research will also investigate the role of factors such as the type of social media use (e.g., passive consumption vs. active engagement), duration of use, and the influence of peer interactions on mental health outcomes. Understanding these nuances is essential for developing effective strategies to promote positive online experiences and mitigate the potential harm associated with social media use. In addition, the project will explore the ways in which teenagers themselves perceive the impact of social media on their mental health. By gathering data through surveys and interviews with adolescents, the research aims to capture the lived experiences and perspectives of young people in relation to their social media use. This qualitative data will provide valuable insights into the subjective experiences of teenagers and shed light on the complex interplay between social media and mental health. Overall, this research project seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between social media and mental health among teenagers. By identifying both the positive and negative effects of social media use, the findings of this study can inform policymakers, educators, parents, and mental health professionals on how to support young people in navigating the digital landscape in a healthy and mindful manner.
