Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This research project investigates the impact of social media usage on the mental health of adolescents. Social media has become an integral part of young people's lives, influencing their behaviors, thoughts, and emotions. The study aims to explore the relationship between social media engagement and mental health outcomes such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and body image issues among teenagers. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of adolescents aged 13-18. The quantitative survey measures the frequency and duration of social media usage, types of platforms used, and self-reported mental health symptoms. In contrast, the qualitative interviews offer in-depth insights into how social media interactions affect adolescents' perceptions of themselves and others. Preliminary findings suggest a complex interplay between social media usage and mental health outcomes. While some adolescents report feeling more connected and supported through online interactions, others experience increased feelings of loneliness, social comparison, and inadequacy. Notably, heavy users of social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat tend to exhibit higher levels of anxiety and body dissatisfaction compared to those who use these platforms less frequently. Furthermore, the research identifies certain risk factors that contribute to negative mental health impacts associated with social media use. These include cyberbullying, exposure to unrealistic beauty standards, fear of missing out (FOMO), and the pressure to present a curated image of oneself online. Adolescents who spend excessive time on social media are more likely to internalize these negative influences, leading to adverse psychological effects. The study also highlights potential protective factors that can mitigate the detrimental effects of social media on adolescent mental health. Positive online interactions, parental monitoring, digital literacy skills, and emotional resilience are identified as key factors that can promote healthier social media use among teenagers. Overall, this research contributes to a better understanding of the complex relationship between social media and adolescent mental health. By identifying both the risks and benefits associated with social media usage, this study aims to inform interventions and strategies that can support young people in navigating the digital landscape more effectively and safeguarding their mental well-being.
