Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This research project aimed to investigate the perception of undergraduate students in Nigerian universities regarding the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) for learning. The study focused on exploring how students perceive the integration of ICT tools and resources into their academic activities and the impact it has on their learning experiences. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of students' perspectives. The sample consisted of undergraduate students from various disciplines in different Nigerian universities. Data was collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings revealed that the majority of students had a positive perception of using ICT for learning. They viewed ICT tools such as laptops, smartphones, and the internet as essential for accessing information, conducting research, and collaborating with peers. Students appreciated the convenience and flexibility that ICT provided in terms of accessing learning materials and communicating with their instructors. However, challenges were also identified, including inadequate ICT infrastructure and internet connectivity issues in some universities. Students expressed frustration with slow internet speeds, limited access to online resources, and the lack of technical support. These challenges hindered their ability to fully leverage ICT for learning purposes. Despite the challenges, students acknowledged the importance of developing digital literacy skills to effectively use ICT for academic purposes. They emphasized the need for universities to provide training and support to enhance their ICT skills and knowledge. Additionally, students highlighted the importance of incorporating ICT into the curriculum to prepare them for the digital demands of the modern workforce. Overall, the study highlighted the significance of ICT in enhancing the learning experiences of undergraduate students in Nigerian universities. It underscored the need for universities to invest in improving ICT infrastructure, providing technical support, and integrating ICT into teaching and learning practices. By addressing these issues, universities can better support students in utilizing ICT for academic success and preparing them for the digital future.

Thesis Overview

This study investigates the perception of undergraduate students’ on the use of mobile ICT for learning. Since the use of ICT in education is a new phenomenon, there is an urgent need to inquire of their impact and effect on the learner and the entire learning process. Undergraduate students were primary focus of the study because it is believed that they are all familiar with mobile ICT and their uses.

A researcher designed a questionnaire which was used to elucidate undergraduate students’ perception of the aforementioned topic. The study targeted all undergraduates in Nigerian Universities but those at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria were selected as sample for the study. 100 respondents were selected by random sampling. This sample cuts across five faculties in the University. These are: Arts, Communication and Information Science, Education, Law and Science.

The data was analyzed through the use of percentages. Results of data analysis showed that mobile Information and Communication Technologies, when appropriately used for learning, motivate students’ interest, enhances individualized instruction and generally improves their overall performance. It was recommended that since the world is now a global village, the use of mobile ICT for learning should be implemented in higher institutions. More importantly, students should be kept abreast of innovation in education.
