Thesis Abstract

**Abstract
** The sustainable production of maize, a staple crop globally, is essential for food security and economic stability. Efficient irrigation practices play a crucial role in enhancing crop yield and water use efficiency. This study aimed to assess the effects of different irrigation methods on crop yield and water use efficiency in maize cultivation. The research focused on comparing traditional flood irrigation, drip irrigation, and sprinkler irrigation systems in terms of their impact on crop productivity and water conservation. The study was conducted over a period of one agricultural season in a maize field located in a semi-arid region. The experimental design involved the random allocation of plots to each irrigation treatment, with each treatment replicated three times to ensure statistical reliability. Data on crop yield, water consumption, soil moisture levels, and weather conditions were collected throughout the growing season. The results indicated that drip irrigation significantly outperformed flood and sprinkler irrigation methods in terms of crop yield and water use efficiency. Drip irrigation resulted in higher maize yields with reduced water consumption compared to the other methods. This finding highlights the potential of drip irrigation as a sustainable practice for maize cultivation in water-scarce regions. Furthermore, the study revealed that soil moisture levels were better maintained under drip irrigation, leading to improved plant growth and development. The efficient use of water resources under drip irrigation also contributed to environmental conservation and reduced water wastage. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into the benefits of different irrigation methods on crop yield and water use efficiency in maize cultivation. The findings underscore the importance of adopting sustainable irrigation practices to enhance agricultural productivity while conserving water resources. The results of this study can inform policymakers, farmers, and stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding irrigation strategies for maize production. Further research is recommended to explore the long-term effects of different irrigation methods on soil health, crop quality, and overall sustainability in maize cultivation. Keywords Maize cultivation, irrigation methods, crop yield, water use efficiency, sustainable agriculture.
