Abstract
This research project delves into the concept of hybrid sovereignties in Nigeria, challenging the traditional understanding of state power and sovereignty in the African context. By going beyond the conventional notion of a weak state, this study explores the complex web of power dynamics and authority structures that exist in Nigeria, resulting in what can be termed as hybrid sovereignties. These hybrid forms of sovereignty encompass a variety of actors, including state institutions, traditional authorities, religious organizations, and non-state actors, all of which play a significant role in governing and shaping the political landscape of the country. Through a multidisciplinary approach drawing from political science, anthropology, and sociology, this research investigates how these hybrid sovereignties operate in practice and interact with one another to influence governance, security, and development in Nigeria. By examining case studies and empirical evidence, the study aims to uncover the intricate power relations and negotiations that occur between different actors, shedding light on the complexities of governance and authority in the country. Furthermore, this research project seeks to analyze the implications of hybrid sovereignties on state-building efforts, democratization processes, and conflict resolution in Nigeria. By understanding the dynamics of power and authority in this context, policymakers, scholars, and practitioners can develop more nuanced strategies to address governance challenges and promote sustainable development in the country. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on African politics and statehood by offering a fresh perspective on sovereignty and governance beyond the traditional state-centric approach. In conclusion, this research project argues that the concept of hybrid sovereignties provides a valuable framework for understanding the complex political landscape of Nigeria and other African countries facing similar challenges. By recognizing the diverse sources of authority and power that coexist within these societies, policymakers and stakeholders can better navigate the complexities of governance and foster more inclusive and effective decision-making processes. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to ongoing debates on statehood, sovereignty, and governance in Africa, offering new insights and perspectives on how power operates in diverse and dynamic political contexts.
