Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The construction industry is increasingly turning towards sustainable building practices that focus on reducing carbon footprints and enhancing energy efficiency. One of the emerging construction techniques is the use of stabilized compressive interlocking earth blocks (SCIEBs) which offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional building materials. The production of SCIEBs involves utilizing local soil stabilized with a binder to create durable and stable blocks that interlock during assembly, eliminating the need for mortar. This research project aims to determine the suitability of local soil in the production of SCIEBs by conducting a comprehensive investigation of soil properties, stabilization techniques, and block performance. The study involves collecting soil samples from different regions and analyzing their particle size distribution, plasticity index, moisture content, and compaction characteristics. Various stabilizers such as cement, lime, and fly ash are tested to identify the most suitable binder for enhancing the strength and durability of the blocks. Laboratory tests are conducted to evaluate the compressive strength, water absorption rate, and durability of the SCIEBs produced using different soil-stabilizer combinations. The blocks are subjected to compression tests to assess their load-bearing capacity and resistance to environmental factors such as moisture and temperature variations. Microstructural analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is performed to examine the interlocking mechanism and bonding characteristics of the blocks. In addition to laboratory testing, field trials are carried out to evaluate the feasibility of using locally available soil for SCIEB production in real-world construction projects. The performance of the blocks in terms of structural stability, thermal insulation, and overall quality is assessed through on-site testing and monitoring. The economic viability of producing SCIEBs using local soil is also analyzed to determine the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of this construction technique. The findings of this research provide valuable insights into the potential of utilizing local soil resources for sustainable construction practices. By optimizing soil-stabilizer combinations and production techniques, it is possible to manufacture high-quality SCIEBs that meet the structural requirements of modern buildings while reducing environmental impact and promoting community development. This study contributes to the advancement of sustainable building technologies and encourages the adoption of innovative construction methods that prioritize resource efficiency and ecological conservation.
