Abstract
This thesis explores the implementation of sustainable supply chain practices in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with a focus on enhancing environmental, social, and economic performance. The study addresses the increasing importance of sustainability in business operations and the challenges faced by SMEs in adopting sustainable practices within their supply chains. The research methodology employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with quantitative surveys to gather data from a diverse sample of SMEs. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, including the background, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance of the study, structure of the thesis, and definition of terms. Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review covering ten key areas related to sustainable supply chain practices, including definitions of sustainability, drivers of sustainability in supply chains, benefits and challenges of sustainability for SMEs, and best practices in sustainable supply chain management. Chapter Three outlines the research methodology used in the study, detailing the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. The chapter also discusses the development of research instruments and the validation process to ensure the reliability and validity of the data collected. Chapter Four presents a detailed discussion of the research findings, analyzing the current state of sustainable supply chain practices in SMEs, identifying key barriers to implementation, and exploring strategies for overcoming these challenges. The chapter also highlights successful case studies of SMEs that have effectively integrated sustainability into their supply chain operations. In Chapter Five, the conclusion and summary of the thesis are provided, summarizing the key findings, implications for theory and practice, and recommendations for future research. The study concludes that while SMEs face significant challenges in implementing sustainable supply chain practices, there are clear benefits in terms of improved environmental performance, enhanced social responsibility, and increased economic competitiveness. Recommendations for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and SME managers are provided to support the widespread adoption of sustainable practices in SME supply chains. Overall, this thesis contributes to the growing body of knowledge on sustainable supply chain management in SMEs and offers practical insights for businesses seeking to enhance their sustainability performance and create value for all stakeholders.
