Abstract
The research project aimed to investigate the impact of social media on mental health among young adults. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including surveys and interviews with participants aged between 18 and 25. The study found that social media usage was associated with increased feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness. Participants reported feeling pressure to present an idealized version of themselves online, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. The research also revealed that excessive time spent on social media platforms was linked to poor sleep quality and decreased real-world social interactions. Furthermore, the study explored the role of social media in exacerbating existing mental health issues among young adults. Many participants stated that scrolling through social media feeds negatively impacted their mood and self-perception. Comparison to others online, cyberbullying, and the fear of missing out were identified as common stressors contributing to mental health challenges. On the other hand, some participants also acknowledged the positive aspects of social media, such as finding support and community online. The findings suggest a complex relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes, indicating both detrimental and beneficial effects. Recommendations for promoting positive mental health in the digital age include increased awareness of social media's influence, fostering digital literacy skills, and encouraging mindful usage. Educating young adults on setting boundaries, limiting screen time, and seeking help when needed are crucial steps in mitigating the negative impact of social media on mental well-being. Overall, this research contributes to the growing body of literature on the intersection of social media and mental health, particularly focusing on young adults. By shedding light on the multifaceted effects of social media, the study emphasizes the importance of developing strategies to support mental health in the digital era. Future research directions may involve longitudinal studies to explore the long-term consequences of social media use on mental well-being and interventions to promote a healthier relationship with online platforms among young adults.
