Abstract
This thesis presents a comprehensive study on the design and implementation of sustainable housing solutions for urban slums. The rapid urbanization process has led to the proliferation of informal settlements in many cities around the world, resulting in inadequate housing conditions for a significant portion of the population. The aim of this research is to explore innovative approaches to address the housing challenges faced by urban slum dwellers, with a focus on sustainability principles. The introduction provides an overview of the background of the study, highlighting the increasing urbanization trends and the implications for housing in urban slum areas. The problem statement identifies the key issues related to inadequate housing in urban slums, such as overcrowding, poor sanitation, and lack of basic services. The objectives of the study are to analyze the existing housing conditions in urban slums, identify sustainable design strategies, and propose practical solutions for improving housing quality. The literature review examines previous studies and projects related to sustainable housing solutions for urban slums. Ten key themes are explored, including community participation, affordable construction materials, passive design strategies, and innovative financing models. The research methodology section outlines the approach taken to collect and analyze data, including site surveys, interviews with stakeholders, and case studies of successful housing projects. The findings section presents a detailed discussion of the research results, highlighting the key design principles and strategies identified for sustainable housing in urban slums. The analysis includes case studies of successful projects that have implemented innovative solutions to improve housing conditions for slum dwellers. The discussion also addresses the challenges and limitations of implementing sustainable housing solutions in resource-constrained environments. In conclusion, this thesis emphasizes the importance of adopting a holistic and participatory approach to sustainable housing design in urban slums.
